Challenge Problem 9/25-9/27

Here's this week's challenge problem! Solve this problem with family or friends and bring your answer to class. Remember to turn it in (with your NAME) to the clear box in the classroom. All answers are due by the end of the school day on Friday. Good Luck and Happy Solving!!

If there are 20 people at the party and each person shakes hands with everyone there, how many handshakes are there? (Don’t shake your own hand.)

Weekly Update and Homework Calendar 9/25-9/27

Course 2 Update:

Last week we worked a lot with adding and subtracting integers. For adding, we learned a new song (ask your student to sing it). Look here for a review of adding integers.  We also learned there are three important letters for subtracting (L.C.O.).

Pre-Algebra Update:

Last week we continued working with integers as well. We've adding, subtracted, multiplied, and divided them. Hopefully we can keep all the different rules straight in our heads!

Lessons for 9/18

Course 2: Adding Integers

Remember our song/poem for adding integers:
"Same signs add and keep,
Different signs subtract,
Keep the sign of the higher number,
Then it will be exact."

Here's another way of writing the Rules:
When the integers have the SAME signs:
1. Add the numbers together.
2. Keep the same sign.

When the integers have DIFFERENT signs.
1. Ignore the signs.
2. Subtract the 2 numbers.
3. Give the answer the sign of the larger number (number with greater absolute value).

Here's are a couple Khan Academy videos explaining this concept:

Pre-Algebra: Subtracting Integers

Remember, to subtract simply "add the opposite."

Think LCO:
1. Leave the first number.
2. Change subtraction sign to addition sign.
3. Change the second number to it's opposite.

After you've changed your problem to adding, follow our addition rules (listed above...think about singing!).

Here's a Khan Academy video to guide you:

What did you do in math class today?

We were hard at work today!

Course 2 worked on graphing points on a coordinate plane. Check us out!

Lessons for Monday, 9/17

Course 2: Lesson 1C: Coordinate Plane

Remember today we plotted points on a coordinate plane.
We always write a point with like this: (x-coordinate, y-coordinate).
The coordinate plane is broken up into 4 quadrants and they are labeled as follows:

Here is a Khan Academy video about our lesson today.

Pre-Algebra: Lesson 2-2: Adding Integers

Remember our song/poem for adding integers:
"Same signs add and keep,
Different signs subtract,
Keep the sign of the higher number,
Then it will be exact."

Here's another way of writing the Rules:
When the integers have the SAME signs:
1. Add the numbers together.
2. Keep the same sign.

When the integers have DIFFERENT signs.
1. Ignore the signs.
2. Subtract the 2 numbers.
3. Give the answer the sign of the larger number (number with greater absolute value).

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY!!

We are going to be spending some time working with integers.  I have a song that I like to use to help us remember the rules for adding integers.  Last year I had a wonderful YouTube video that I used, unfortunately it has been removed.

This is where I need YOUR help!

Get together with your friends and make a video for me to use in the classroom! If you need help taping, I can use the iPad one day after school.

Here's a video I found on YouTube (I know you all can do MUCH better!):

Here are the lyrics to the song. Remember it's sung to the tune of "Row, Row, Row your Boat."

Same Signs add and keep

Different signs subtract

Take the sign of the higher number

Then you'll be exact

(These are the words I would like to use, I know they are different from the video.)

Please let me know if you're going to try to create a video! I am excited to see what you all come up with!

Weekly Update and Homework Calendar 9/17-9/21

Wow! We had a busy week! We had our first test (and everyone did wonderful!!) and started Chapter 2.  Chapter 2 is about integers (positive and negative numbers); Thursday we took a pretest on the computer. Today we learned about Absolute Value; find an overview of the lesson here.

Find the Challenge Problem here.

Here's a few pictures and videos to show you what we've been up to in class!

Used our online textbook (here) to fill out the Chapter 2 Glossary.

Used Quia (here) to practice Chapter 2 Vocabulary.

Place the digits 1 through 9 in the spaces so that each side of the triangle equals 19.

Absolute Value Videos - Lesson 9/14

Today in class we began our chapter on Absolute Value!  In both class, Chapter 2 is about Integers and begins the same way.

Here's a recap of today's lessons:

Integers are the positive and negative whole numbers on a number line.
Absolute Value is the distance a number is from zero on a number line.

Here are a couple Khan Academy videos about Integers and Absolute Value for your viewing pleasure. If you have homework that you're working on this weekend and need a little brain refresh, these should do the trick!

Here's one I took in class of one of your brave classmates demonstrating how to "walk to the number line," remember this is a great strategy to use when finding the absolute value. We can imagine a number line in our heads and "walk it" or you can draw one out and use your finger!
